‘American Gods’ star Ricky Whittle in talks to star in ‘Green Lantern’ reboot
American Gods star Ricky Whittle reveals that he’s had talks about starring in the reboot.
“The character Green Lantern needs to be reborn. Even Ryan Reynolds came up with that when he killed himself in the Deadpool credits, which was hilarious. I’d love to be a part of that universe, whether it be John Stewart or Simon Baz, maybe. They are both characters I would be honored to play.”
Fans may be surprised to hear Simon Baz, as most fans assumed that the buddy-cop team-up film would star Hal Jordan and John Stewart.
Whittle added that “We know that Green Lantern Corps is coming out. I’ve had conversations, and to be in the conversation is a big honor. That’s all I can really ever ask for. Lots of fans have been campaigning for me. If they can get me Green Lantern, too, we are going to have to do something special. I’m going to have to start doing tours in full costume and go and watch with all the fans. But, yeah, I would love to be a part of that world. Hopefully, they do it justice this time.”
The most recent update on the new film came last year when David Goyer and Justin Rhodes were hired to pen the script. By June of that year, Geoff Johns was hired to do a rewrite that would draw heavily from his New 52 comic book run.
Christopher McQuarrie has previously stated in interviews that he’s also had discussions with WB to potentially direct the project but nothing ever materialized. Back when the DCEU film slate was unveiled, Green Lantern Corps. was given a July 24, 2020 release date, but now a 2021 date would be a stretch. If the project is advancing well, then a 2020 date could happen.
