Ambassador Francis Rooney discusses ‘The Global Vatican,’ the US and Catholic Church ties

the-global-vatican-cover-artFormer Ambassador Francis Rooney has written the new book The Global Vatican, which highlights the history between the US and the Vatican as well as the continuous relationship between the goals of America and those of the Catholic Church.

Rooney spoke with The Global Dispatch/Dispatch Radio about the book, elaborating and detailing the relationship over the years between the United States and the Holy See.

Some hightlights include Rooney explaining why full diplomatic relations with the Holy See didn’t form until Ronald Reagan’s administration, what Pope Benedict XVI was like and how he differs from Pope Francis I.

Rooney uses the term “soft power” as he explains the incredible power of “persuasion” from the Catholic Church and also reflects on the challenges in the wake of 9/11 – the US invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq.

The differences between the Bush administration and the current Obama administration are also evaluated and reveal a distinct contrast in the efforts use the Vatican to help US interests.
