‘Amazing Spider-Man 2’ star Andrew Garfield joins Martin Scorsese for ‘Silence’

Martn Scorsese has made an interesting casting move as Amazing Spider-Man star Andrew Garfield has signed on as the lead role for the director’s new film, Silence.

Variety reported May 7 that Garfield joins the famous director as  Father Rodrigues, the main character in the film. Inception’s Ken Watanabe is also joining the film as the Jesuit’s interpreter.

Silence is an adaptation of the Shusaku Endo novel about 17th century Jesuits who risk their lives to bring Christianity to Japan. Financing for the film has been secured by Emmett/Furla Films and Paul Breuls and his Corsan Films. The plan is to shoot in Taiwan in July 2014, depending on cast, from a script by Jay Cocks and Scorsese.

Scorsese has wanted to make Silence since 1991. He has gotten close numerous times, with actors like Daniel Day-Lewis, Benicio Del Toro and Gael Garcia Bernal among those mentioned over the years. But the pic has always gotten pushed, and there was even a lawsuit over how long it all took.

“It’s something that has always been part of my life,” he says. “It’s difficult for people to understand who are not part of that world that I grew up in, which was Roman Catholicism in New York City in the 1950s. I was impressed enough to try to become part of that world, and realized at the age of 15 or 16 that it was much tougher, much more complicated than I thought … in terms of vocation.”
