Allen Maldonado interview: ‘The Equalizer, Denzel Washington, Honeynuts, ‘Black Jesus’
Actor Allen Maldonado is busy with several projects, including promoting the upcoming film The Equalizer, which stars Denzel Washington. Allen spoke to Dispatch Radio in an exclusive interview about playing Marcus, the young buck who antagonizes Washington’s character as well as many of his other roles.
In The Equalizer, Allen plays the wise-cracking co-worker of Robert McCall (Washington) at the day job. Maldonado explains his character before confessing he is just a “slacker.” Allen couldn’t say enough positive things about working with director Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) and Washington, who gave him a unique nickname after a funny interaction.
Funny names become a prompt for laughter throughout the interview as Allen transitions into discussing his role on the FX comedy You’re the Worst.
His character is named “Honeynutz” in a dark comedy by Stephen Falk who Allen says is “brilliant” and is “capturing the reality of life,” “the trainwreck that is about to happen.”
“It’s fun, I have a good time,” he concludes.
Maldonado doesn’t stop with the fun as Black Jesus by The Boondocks creator Aaron McGruder is next before confessing that it was cool to be killed by Bruce Willis in Live Free or Die Hard.
Allen talks about a ton of great projects coming as well: a role in the N.W.A. biopic produced by Dr. Dre and Ice Cube, co-starring in the comedy 108 Stitches (which arrives in September) and a role in a new Jennifer Aniston film titled Cake.
He is an energetic, enthusiastic fun young man to speak with and we had a ton of laughs, you don’t want to miss it. Check out the full audio interview below.
