‘Allegiant’ tanks as ‘Zootopia’ win tops box office, ‘Miracles From Heaven’ opens strong
Disney’s animated hit Zootopia has claimed a top box office spot for the third straight weekend in a row, topping Allegiant, the third film in the Divergent series.
With an estimated $38+ million this weekend, and having recently crossed the $200 million domestic tally, Zootopia is closing in on $600 million worldwide thanks to strong international support, Collider noted in their coverage.
Allegiant, based on the Veronic Roth novel, missed the mark and earned just over $29 million. In fact, the news is so grim, Lionsgate shares dropped 3%.
“Shares are down about 3% in early trading today — bringing the six-month drop to more than 45% — after the film generated $29 million domestically,” Deadline noted on Monday. “…They don’t believe the film will have a chance to catch up. Next week it will compete with Batman Vs. Superman, which will take over Imax screens.”
The other debut, Patricia Riggen’s faith-based drama Miracles from Heaven, finished in the third spot, earning over $18 million since it’s Wednesday opening.
“Every movie on this weekend’s top ten took at least a 25% hit at the box office, though 10 Cloverfield Lane and Zootopia were the only ones that received a bump in theater count.” (Source)
