‘Alex Cross’ and ‘Cloud Atlas’ prove to be Box Office disasters as ‘Wreck-It Ralph’ opens big
Tom Hanks and Halle Berry couldn’t save “Cloud Atlas” anymore than Tyler Perry could win over fans in Alex Cross,” as two of biggest flops of 2012 are plummeting from box office lists.
“Wreck-It Ralph,” a video game themed animated film by Disney proved to be a huge winner this weekend, opening at #1 with nearly $50 million in the first weekend.
With a $100 million budget, “Cloud Atlas” was a highly anticipated return to Sci-Fi for the Wachowski Brothers, directors of the Matrix franchise. Unfortunately, the film finished third in week one and now adds only $5.25M to squeak the box office total to just over $18 million.
“Alex Cross” has managed to do even worse in its third week. The reboot with Perry fell out of the top ten completely, earning only $2 in the film’s third week. With a meager $23 million, Summit Entertainment is likely to turn the page on the James Patterson series and move on.
Robert Zemeckis was the huge winner at the box office this week, finishing #2 with “Flight” earning $25 million. The Denzel Washington drama was made on a much smaller budget than the other films ($35 million) so that’s a large chunk of the initial investment returned.
Next week marks the return of James Bond to the big screen with “Skyfall,” which has proved to be box office powerhouse in Europe over the last couple of weeks.
