‘Aladdin’ Blu-ray review: A classic revisited with even more Robin Williams

Disney’s re-release of Aladdin carries a bit more emotion after the passing of Robin Williams who brilliantly brought the Genie to life. The new version gives fans a greater and deeper look at the actor’s contribution with a recording booth look and the revelation that the entire project was built around Williams.

Aladdin is underrated by some, overrated by many, but has carved out an entertaining legacy for both children and their parents. This is the classic Disney formula of the helpless princess, the underdog discovering his true potential, the goofy animal sidekick and a decent smattering of song-and-dance. Genie, of course, is the star and the new Blu-ray delivers great sound with crisp visuals.

Aladdin Diamond Edition Bluray DVD setIn fact, the 2D animation holds up well because of the Pixar minds pushing the ink. Disney films excels in captivating young minds and the “Cave of Wonders” sequence is balanced perfectly against the jokes and gags along the way.

Most of the extras are the recycled features from DVD and previous releases, but the focus on Williams pays tribute to his iconic performance and the Audio Outtakes are worthy of an extra screening. “Unboxing Aladdin” is an Easter Egg which proved to be more fun than expected as fans are likely to learn a thing or two.

For fans of the film’s songs, “Aladdin: Creating Broadway Music” was surprisingly entertaining and engaging. The stories are interesting and the behind-the-scenes look is great.

While the Aladdin Blu-ray release is a bit overdue, fans get a great audio transfer and few more nuggets, possibly because of the loss of Robin Williams.

Overall the Blu-ray Aladdin: Diamond Edition receives 3 1/2 stars out of 5 stars

Add a star if you are already a big fan of Aladdin or just Disney stuff in general. It truly delivers!
