Advantages of Laparoscopic procedure for Gallstone Surgical treatment

You’re probably wondering how does a surgical treatment come with no cuts, wounds or pain, well, that’s the magic of advanced medical technology. While the world maybe throwing light on the cons of technology, it’s definitely a pro for those who have been diagnosed with gallstones.

There are many options for gallstone treatment, but laparoscopic surgery has become the most preferred and common form of treatment, thanks to its many benefits. If you’re looking for a treatment option and are confused between medication, open surgery and laparoscopic surgery, then here are the main advantages of laparoscopic treatment to help you understand this surgical option better.

  1. Smaller Incisions

Laparoscopic surgery or ‘keyhole’ cholecystectomy requires a surgeon to make 3-4 very small incisions through which they insert a video camera inside the inflated abdomen, get a clear view of the abdomen on the monitor and then insert surgical instruments through the other incisions to remove the gallbladder.

In open surgery, a larger incision is made in the abdomen to remove the gallbladder. This treatment option is usually chosen when there are certain complications from prior surgery or due to a bleeding problem.

  1. Faster Recovery Time

Laparoscopic surgery doesn’t require you to be admitted in the hospital for a long time. Usually this treatment is done as an outpatient and lets you go home on the same day. The surgery lasts for about 2 hours and has much less pain or complications post surgery. A patient can expect to resume normal, daily routine within days after the laparoscopy. The traditional open surgery requires 4 to 6 weeks of recovery time and causes more discomfort and pain.

  1. Costs

The cost of a traditional open cholecystectomy is higher than that of laparoscopic surgery for gallstones. While considering how much time a traditional open surgery will take to recover from and the cost, it makes more sense to opt for laparoscopic surgery. An open surgery will demand more days of rest from you making it difficult for you to resume work quickly. The number of days you miss out on work will add to the overall cost way more than the simple procedure of laparoscopic surgery.

  1. The Popular and Preferred Method

Laparoscopic surgery for gallstone treatment is the most popular, common and preferred method to remove gallstones. The ease of treatment, less recovery time, less pain and most importantly, very small incisions have made it the favourite treatment option. The two major factors of comfort and less complicated surgery, have made it the most chosen treatment option.

  1. Less Risks of Surgical Complications

There is less blood loss and low risk of recurrence in laparoscopic surgery than in open surgery. The obvious reason is the bigger and deeper incision that is made in the abdomen in an open surgery. The minor and small incisions that are made in laparoscopic are almost insignificant and hence, lower the risk of complications and infections.

  1. Post Surgical Care

Post surgical care in laparoscopic surgery is less complicated and easy than after open surgery. There are more diet and movement restrictions in open surgery. You may be asked not to drive for at least 2 to 3 weeks, not do heavy lifting and follow a strict diet.

However, laparoscopic surgery doesn’t ask for 2-3 weeks of recovery time, in fact in most of the cases, you can get back to your normal routine in just 2 to 3 days. There are certain exercises that you maybe asked to do after your surgery, but these are just for few days after the surgery, making it a better choice when it comes to recovery and post- operative care.

Conclusion

No surgery is free of risks and 100% guaranteed, what actually happens in surgery can only be predicted when a surgeon is actually performing the procedure. But, by textbook methods and experience, laparoscopic surgery is much more safer, comfortable and convenient method of gallstone treatment. It is the advancement of technology that has made major surgical treatments, more easier and convenient on the patient. Suffering from gallstones no longer means a painful and scarred surgical treatment, it can easily be treated with a 2 hour procedure, with minor incisions, no scarring and under general anesthesia.
