ABC cancels ‘The Muppets,’ ‘The Family’ and ‘Galavant’
ABC put an end to several high profile shows: The Muppets, The Family and Galavant. Deadline summarized the state of each and offers up enough insight to squash objections.
For example, “The Muppets struggled to get traction with viewers with its original incarnation in the fall and the midseason creative reboot despite a high level of curiosity and nostalgia that brought in viewers for the premiere, which logged 9 million viewers and a 2.7 demo rating in Live+same day.”
Just ahead of the cancellation, The Muppets closed out their first season with only 2.7 million viewers — less than one third of that premiere.
Another new show, The Family, couldn’t muster enough support and interest to garner a second season: “With Shondaland’s The Catch renewed, The Family is being canceled. The dark drama starring Joan Allen struggled to get traction though had some promising upticks in DVR viewing. Its most recent episode drew a 0.7 rating in adults 18-49 and 2.6 million viewers in Live+same day,” Deadline notes.
Described as a quirky little musical medieval comedy, Galavant was “…formally canceled after two seasons. The producers themselves had called the Season 2 renewal ‘a miracle.’ With creator Dan Fogelman and the show’s biggest supporter, former ABC topper Paul Lee, out of the Disney fold, the softly-rated comedy had little chance of continuing.”
