A Comprehensive Guide To Manage Stress At Work In Software Industry

Stress has become so common these days, especially for software programmers. Deadlines for completion of projects and long hours of sitting jobs and too much cracking of brains may cause a lot of stress. Do you want to know how to manage stress?

You should understand the difference between good and bad stress before knowing how to manage stress. Low level stress is referred to as good stress. Low level of stress helps you to complete a work perfectly. It makes you focus more on your work. On the other hand bad stress affects you in many ways. How does bad stress affect you?

  • It increases the rate of blood pressure
  • The rate of heart beat increases and can also cause abnormal  beating of heart
  • It increases blood sugar levels and increases the risk of diabetes
  • It may lead to obesity because of eating disorders like overeating  
  • It may cause respiration problems
  • It leads to mental health issues like depression and anxiety
  • Nagging headache is one of the effects of stress
  • It affects your cardiovascular system, digestive system and nervous system

How to manage stress?

  1. Exercise regularly – Being physically active is very effective in stress relief. All types of physical exercises like walking, swimming, running and cycling etc. are good to get rid of stress. Rhythmic activities like dancing and aerobics are very good to give relief from stress.
  2. Breathing exercises, meditation and yoga – Yoga is very good for both your mind and body. It helps in stress relief very effectively. Slow inhalation and very slow and long exhalation helps you to relieve from stress.
  3. Sleep well. Good sleep is very essential to reduce stress. There are several factors that affect good sleep including a bad mattress. If your mattress is more than 10 years old you should replace it as early as possible. Buy the best foam mattress to sleep comfortably.
  4. Keep connected with others. Join a club to meet new people.
  5. Make sure you spare time to have fun and relax. Do something that you love to do during your leisure time.
  6. Don’t keep your feelings bottled up. Cry when you want to and laugh when you want to.

What can you do when you are at work?

  • Don’t sit for long hours in the same place. Get up from your seat after every hour and go for a small walk.
  • Avoid drinking too much of caffeine.
  • Don’t smoke at work.
  • Listen to your favorite music while working.
  • Don’t keep yourselves locked in your cabin. Talk with your colleagues.
  • Share your work with others and help others in their work
  • Have lunch with your friends. Have a leisurely lunch.
  • When you feel you will not be able to complete a work, learn to say ‘no’ very politely.
  • If someone irritates you, learn to ignore, forgive, and forget.

Getting rid of stress will help you to perform better at work and improving your personal life. Life is short. Enjoy.
