What Is Type 2 Diabetes?

Type 2 diabetes is a condition wherein the body finds it difficult to manage its glucose level – an essential component that’s regulated by the insulin hormone. This typically happens either when the body is unable to produce enough quantities of insulin, the cells stop responding to insulin, or a combination of both.

Obesity is one of the primary risk factors of type 2 diabetes apart from metabolic syndrome, altered genes, broken beta cells, bad communication between the cells, and dissemination of too much glucose from the liver.

Long-term and uncontrolled blood sugar levels can cause many fatal complications including nerve damage, eye damage, hearing impairment, kidney damage, skin problems, and heart diseases. Some of these complications can even cause amputations, mostly in the legs or feet.

Preventing diabetes on ground level and its related complications demands early diagnosis and constant treatment. Hence, identifying early signs and symptoms of type 2 diabetes utmost important.

Signs and Symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes

Most endocrinologists state that early signs of type 2 diabetes are quite difficult to identify. They usually develop slowly and most of them are asymptomatic in nature. At the same time, symptoms of this lifestyle disease worsen over many years. So, knowing about them in advance can lower your chances to a great extent.

  1. Frequent Urination

Medically known as polyuria, excessive and frequent urination may although signify conditions like dysfunctionality of the kidneys and urinary tract infection – advice and treatment for these specific issues can be found at  urocarelondon.com – it also indicates a high blood sugar level.

High enough for the body to start spilling it off through urine. This typically happens because the kidneys are unable to keep pace with increasing blood sugar levels. So, it allows some of the sugar to exit the body through urine.

  1. Extreme Thirst

Extreme thirst is linked to the presence of excess quantities of glucose in the blood stream. In fact, it is one of the most noticeable signs of type 2 diabetes in a majority of cases. It is interlinked with excessive and frequent urination.

  1. Increased Hunger

Feeling hungry all the time, or in medical terms, suffering from polyphagia, is also a warning sign of type 2 diabetes. The human body uses its sugar to feed the cells. When the cells are unable to absorb the sugar, due to lack of insulin, it indicates the mind to source more fuel and hence, causing persistent hunger.

  1. Numbness or Pain in the Nerves

Experiencing a tingling sensation or numbness in the hands, fingers, toes and feet is also an early warning sign of type 2 diabetes and diabetic neuropathy or nerve damage. You’re most likely to experience this symptoms after many years of living with type 2 diabetes.

  1. Wounds that take longer than Usual to Heal

Although there are many reasons behind why a wound is taking more time than usual to heal, diabetes can be one of them. Poor circulation of blood, immunodeficiency and the effects of high blood glucose on the blood vessels are just a few reasons which follow.

  1. Blurry Vision

This serves as a warning sign in individuals whose blood glucose level goes beyond the acceptable range. At this stage, blood glucose causes fluid to enter the lens of the eye causing a blurry vision. The condition however resolves when blood sugar levels come back in their normal range.

  1. Dark Skin Patches

Discoloration of the skin, especially in the folds of the skin, is another early warning sign of type 2 diabetes. This can be mostly seen in the armpits, neck and the groin regions, according to a leading diabetes medical house.

Tips to Prevent Type 2 Diabetes

As stated above, type 2 diabetes can be easily prevented. However, one needs to make proper efforts to prevent the condition from arising in the first place. Changing lifestyle habits is one the most important things here.

Tips to preventing type 2 diabetes are as follows:

  • Managing Weight: Excess body fat, especially if it’s stored around your abdomen areas, can increase your body’s resistance to insulin. This can further cause type 2 diabetes. So, keep your weight in check. Lose those extra pounds.
  • Exercising regularly: Exercising for at least 30 minutes a day can significantly lower your chances of developing type 2 diabetes. It improves good cholesterol components in the blood, keeps blood pressure in check and even manages weight.
  • Eating a healthy, balanced diet: As simples as reducing fat intake in your diet, especially saturated and trans fats, can lower your chances of developing this lifestyle disease. Eat more fruits, vegetables and high-fibre foods.
  • Limiting alcohol consumption: Too much alcohol can not only cause weight gain, but also increase your blood pressure, diabetes as well as triglyceride levels. Limit your intake and prevent diabetes.
  • Quit smoking: Smokers, especially active smokers, are twice as likely to develop diabetes as non or passive smoker.
  • Reduce your risk of developing cardiovascular diseases: Diabetes and cardiovascular disease go hand-in-hand. They have many risk factors in common, which typically include obesity and physical inactivity as their primes. Pay attention to your weight and exercise daily to avoid both, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

Talk to your physician about these early warning signs of diabetes and get tested at regular intervals to rest assured that you’re leading a healthy, happy and disease-free life. If you are diagnosed with diabetes, talk to your doctor about possible resources and treatment options.
