4 Things You Need to Know about Water Damage

Natural disasters are a rare occurrence but when they happen, they leave behind a trail of destruction. Even then, some types of water damage like pipe failure, plumbing leaks and drain overflows are bound to happen at any given time.

Restoring your home after water damage can be quite frustrating and stressful. Besides, the longer the water stays, the greater the damage. Therefore, you will do well to consider calling emergency water damage service providers to help you save your home.

But before then, there are a few things you need to know about water damage so that you are well informed in the event that you have a water damage situation to handle in your home. When you know about water damage, you will be able to make the right decision when addressing it, should it come up. Here are four things you need to know about water damage:

  • You don’t have much time once the damage has occurred – It is common to panic when you realize you are experiencing water damage in your home. While this is a natural and expected response, you should not dwell here for long. Instead, move with speed to get a quick solution before things get out of hand.

Remember, you don’t have the luxury of waiting until the opportune time comes for you to begin cleaning. Taking action immediately will prevent secondary damage from happening that may be in the form of mold growth, which is bad for your health. Generally, you need to ensure you take action within 24 to 48 hours to remove the water and ensure everything is dried out. Remember, this will also save most of your property.

  • There are insurance policies for water damage – There is usually a separate insurance policy that addresses issues relating to water damage. Therefore, if you live in an area that is prone to flooding, you need to find out if you need to sign up for it. Subsequently, you will also need to be specific when making your claim.
  • Inform your insurance company immediately – It is advisable that you get in touch with your insurance company at the earliest opportunity when you discover you have water damage. This way, they are able to begin processing claims immediately and even guide you through the steps you must take to protect your property.
  • Not all water damage is covered by insurance – You will do well to look through your insurance policy to understand what the policy covers for and what it does not. For instance, most of the policies will only cater for those damages that are a result of a sudden occurrence such as a storm or even an overflowing machine. On the other hand, damage that is a result of your carelessness such as gradual leaks or poor maintenance of property will not be covered.

Overall, it is no doubt that water damage can be a nightmare for you. However, you must know the steps you need to take to get the situation under control. Most importantly, you need to know what your insurance cover caters for in such events.
