4 Reasons You Aren’t Sleeping Well
Many people find themselves hitting a dip at some point in the day feeling exhausted. It can affect your mood, your performance at work, and even your family life. This is usually attributed to not sleeping well.
One of the most important things that you can do for your health is ensuring that you are properly resting your body each night. Otherwise, without resetting your system you will find that you aren’t only exhausted but you are much more prone to getting ill since it affects your immune system. Therefore, in order to get a better night’s rest and have the best health possible, take a look at some of the biggest reasons people don’t sleep well and see if it applies to you.
Too Much Stimulation Before Bedtime
If you are stimulating your brain too much before bedtime, this can create a problem for getting yourself to sleep. Generally, stimulation comes from screens like televisions, computers, and phones. In this modern age, more and more people are used to getting to into bed with their device and scrolling for an hour or two before closing their eyes.
Sometimes this evolves into hours and hours using apps, scrolling websites, or looking at videos without even realizing how much time has passed.
Therefore, try to stop using screens at least an hour before bed. Instead, open a book (not a Kindle) and try to enjoy a technology-free wind-down before closing your eyes. You’ll find that you drift off to sleep much faster.
Drinking Alcohol
Drinking too much alcohol before bedtime can result in falling asleep faster, however, your sleep becomes interrupted and you wake up throughout the night. Since your body never enters a deep sleep you end up waking up just as tired when you wake up, regardless of how much you slept.
Try to limit your alcohol consumption not only for better sleep but for better overall health.
Stress
When things are weighing heavily on our minds we can find ourselves lying awake at night staring at the ceiling wondering, worrying, and thinking about all of it. When your mind is on overdrive like this it can affect your sleep patterns.
Even when you do eventually fall asleep it can creep into your dreams and cause nightmares.
Try to do some relaxation techniques before bed if you are feeling particularly stressed and you will find that you feel much better before bedtime and sleep much more peacefully.
Bad Mattress
If you are sleeping on a mattress which has bad back support or causes you pain, you may want to consider replacing your bed. A bad mattress not only attributes to bad sleep but can lead to chronic back pain over time.
