27 dead, mostly children as shooter attacks Connecticut school then kills himself

27 are confirmed dead, mostly elementary school children, who were shot and killed at a Newtown, Connecticut elementary school this morning, federal and state sources have told the press.

Two gunmen entered Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut this morning, murdering over two dozen. The number may rise, says a source to The Global Dispatch.

Car-to-car searches are underway as one shooter is still atlarge, while the other is confirmed dead. The suspect’s body is in a classroom at the school, the source told CNN. It is a 24-year-old man from New Jersey, wearing mostly black and wore a bulletproof vest.

The Newtown Bee newspaper said one child had been carried out by a police officer and emergency crews had set up triage facilities, expecting additional patients. The Hartford Courant newspaper said one victim had “numerous gunshot wounds.”

Reports say that principal Dawn Hochsprung was shot and a school psychologist was killed, according to a parent who claimed to witness part of the attack, CNN reported.

CBS reports that a student’s father was the shooter.

While some students have been reunited with their parents on the school’s perimeter, one group of students remains unaccounted for, a source with a child in the school confirmed to the Dispatch.

The school is kindergarten through fourth grade and has about 450 students.

Newtown Public School District secretary of superintendent Kathy June said in a statement that the district’s school were locked down because of the report of a shooting. “The district is taking preventive measures by putting all schools in lockdown until we ensure the safety of all students and staff.”

State police sent SWAT team units to Newtown.

All public and private schools in the town are on lockdown.

“We have increased our police presence at all Danbury Public Schools due to the events in Newtown. Pray for the victims,” Newtown Mayor Boughton tweeted.

State emergency management officials said ambulances and other units were also en route and staging near the school.
