2018 Release dates confirmed for ‘X-Men Dark Phoenix’ ‘Deadpool 2’ and ‘New Mutants’

Fox may not have the franchise that Marvel Studios has created, but plenty of comic book fans and moviegoers will be thrilled to learn that 2018 will be a big year for the studio, setting dates for Deadpool 2, New Mutants and X-Men: Dark Phoenix.

After the shocking success of the first film, Deadpool 2 lands right in the middle of the summer action on June 1, 2018. Ryan Reynolds will be back, of course, with newcomers Josh Brolin as Cable and Atlanta breakout Zazie Beets as Domino and John Wick director David Leitch behind the camera, replacing Tim Miller.

The June release date positions Deadpool one week after Disney and Lucasfilm’s standalone Han Solo movie and a week before Warner Bros. Ocean’s 8 and Paramount’s Transformers Spin-Off.

Basically, it’s landing right in the midst of the summer blockbuster swell, an interesting departure from the brilliant release date strategy employed on the first film. Just note that this likely could spell box office disaster and disappoint the studio execs greedy for a follow-up.

Josh Boone‘s New Mutants adaptation will arrive in the lead-up to the summer season on April 13, 2018.

Good or bad, this will give the film two full weeks before the Marvel release of Avengers: Infinity War, so again…a likely box office nightmare. To prove Fox doesn’t seem interested in good planning and scoping out prime movie release times: X-Men: Dark Phoenix will open in theaters on November 2, 2018, squaring off directly against Disney’s live-action Mulan.

Simon Kinberg, the writer/producer of X-Men: Days of Future Past and X-Men: Apocalypse as well as the producer of Deadpool and X-Men: First Class, was being eyed to direct the next main X-Men movie. Kinberg has been itching to tell the Dark Phoenix story for some time now and since the studio doesn’t seem to be interested in conventional wisdom for success, let him try.

Fans would be interested in having a passionate director take the job rather than get a knock-off who is just trying to save his career….Brett Ratner comes to mind.
