10 Things to Ask Before Choosing a College for a Major in Music

If you would like to go to music college to learn about production, music, composition, performance, or any other element of the industry, it is important that you know how to choose a proper school. While choosing the best music college is subjective in nature as it depends entirely on your particular needs and requirements. There are a couple of things you should ask yourself – and the school – to help you decide. Below is a list of the 10 top things to ask before agreeing to enroll.

10 Things to Ask Before Picking Your School

  1. Who are the alumni of the school, and what kind of work are they doing today? Feel free to contact these people personally, through channels such as LinkedIn and other professional social media options, to ask whether they would recommend the school you are considering or not. This is particularly important if they are doing the job you would like to do.
  2. How much does the school cost? You also need to know what is included in the tuition fees you are quoted. Things like books, room and board, and placements, can all come to added costs.
  3. Who will teach you and what is their experience. Ideally, you want a teacher who is not just qualified as a teacher, but who also has firsthand experience in the subject they teach.
  4. Does the school give you the opportunity to develop your own style? You may be into jazz, for instance, or even death metal. Either way, you need to make sure that you will have a chance to delve deeper into your chosen style.
  5. Does the school offer any post-graduation support? They should help you to find work, link you to others in the music industry, provide you with internships and/or externships, and so on.
  6. What will your first semester look like? Generally speaking, this is the period of time where you will focus on generic issues, rather than on the specific elements that you are interested in. Everybody has to go through this foundational period of time.
  7. Can you visit the school? You need to get a feel for what the school looks like and how to navigate the classrooms. Additionally, you need to make sure that you will feel at home there.
  8. What is the percentage of alumni that actually work in the music industry? The school should offer support in this, so it is reasonable to expect a large proportion of alumni is employed within two years of graduating, preferably in the music industry.
  9. Which guest speakers will the school organize, and do they come from a background that you are interested in?
  10. How big are the class sizes?

Choosing a college is a huge decision that you should only make once you have examined all your options. Hopefully, the above ten questions will help you to at least make a decent shortlist of potential colleges.
