WWE Smackdown Live Results and Review January 8 2019 : Bowen’s Botches and Bodyslams

WWE Smackdown Live is from the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida this week. The Main Event is a Women’s Division Triple Threat Match between Becky Lynch, Charlotte Flair, and Carmella to determine who will face Asuka for the Smackdown Women’s Championship at the Royal Rumble. The Usos will face the Smackdown Tag Team Champions The Bar in a match for an opportunity to face them again with the titles on the line.

Show Opener with WWE Champion Daniel Bryan at the Concession Stand

R-Truth vs. Daniel Bryan

Daniel Bryan wins by Pinfall after the Running Knee. AJ Styles attacked Daniel Bryan on the ramp after the match and Daniel Bryan ran away while Styles was being stopped.

Tag Team Match
Rey Mysterio and Mustafa Ali vs. Samoa Joe and Andrade Cien Almas with Zelina Vega

Andrade Cien Almas scores the Pinfall victory over Rey Mysterio after the Hammerlock DDT.

Shane McMahon and The Miz Backstage

United States Champion Rusev In Ring

Tag Team Match for Smackdown Tag Team Championship Opportunity
The Bar (c) (Sheamus and Cesaro) vs. The Usos (Jimmy and Jey)

Cesaro scores the PInfall victory over Jey Uso after Mandy Rose came out and distracted Jimmy preventing the tag. The Miz came out after the match to challenge The Bar for the Smackdown Tag Team Championships at Royal Rumble, resulting in a Braugh Kick from Sheamus before The Bar accepted the challenge.

Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville Backstage

Daniel Bryan Backstage Leaving the Arena

The Miz and Shane McMahon Backstage

Triple Threat Match for Smackdown Women’s Championship Match at Royal Rumble
Becky Lynch vs. Charlotte Flair vs. Carmella

Becky Lynch wins by Submission against Carmella with the Disarm Her. Asuka came out to taunt Becky Lynch in the ring after the match.

Botches

  • Heel Daniel Bryan makes no sense. We cheer AJ Styles because we eat junk food to fill a void? I feel bad for him being forced to deliver this ridiculous script.
  • Rusev is somewhere in between having a bad script and a bad delivery, but he’s definitely not living up to the role that made everyone go nuts for Rusev Day.

Bodyslams

  • The opening match was hot, and showcased four of the best workers on the roster. Rey Mysterio and Andrade Cien Almas can make magic in the ring, and I want more of these two together.
  • Becky Lynch is still the highlight of Smackdown and the best thing going in the industry. She has the presence of a champion and is successfully carrying the weight.

It really is a shame to see Daniel Bryan being squandered this way. He is one of the best talkers in the business, but can only do so much with the material he is given. There is an obvious attempt to tap into who he really is to create this character, but the way this is being delivered is falling flat in my household, and there is no longer any excitement to see him as my family is gathered around the television on Tuesday night. It’s a shame that someone who was once the hottest name in WWE and a highlight to the show is now easily dismissed. There are several stories taking place that are far more compelling. I’m very interested in seeing how this tag team of The Miz and Shane McMahon plays out, and this new angle with Mandy Rose and Jimmy Uso creating jealousy in Naomi is fantastic thus far. It could all go bad at any moment, but I’m already excited to see these two women in a match. Rey Mysterio and Andrade Cien Almas are probably the best possible match that can be created on this roster, and hopefully we will get a series of matches out of these two. They have the potential to create highlights that will play in WWE promo videos for decades.
