WWE Smackdown Live Results and Review January 22 2019 : Bowen’s Botches and Bodyslams

WWE Smackdown LIve is from the Intrust Bank Arena in Wichita, Kansas this week in the last show before the Royal Rumble. WWE is promoting a face to face meeting between the WWE Champion Daniel Bryan and his challenger at the Royal Rumble, moderated by Vince McMahon. Rey Mysterio will face Andrade in a 2 out of 3 Falls Match with Zelina Vega barred from ringside.

Botches

  • The opening segment was so strong that Charlotte’s weak promo stood out prominently.
  • The Face to Face with Daniel Bryan and AJ Styles was boring and I lost interest just before McMahon tried to get Bryan in the ring.

Bodyslams

  • Becky Lynch and Asuka were perfection in the opening segment. Both of them were on fire in their delivery and timing, and the segment was written to their strengths. Asuka not getting on the mic was the right move, and kept the segment rolling.
  • Andrade and Rey Mysterio tore the house down once again, and that Top Rope Sit Out Power Bomb from Andrade on Mysterio was simply amazing.

This was a great Smackdown overall, and all of the matches were well done. Becky Lynch opened up the show once again, and her and Asuka delivered an opener that is as good as it gets. Neither wasted a single motion or facial expression, and their timing was perfect. No one ever seemed to be waiting for anyone to get into position, which happens far too often in WWE lately. Daniel Bryan and AJ Styles were dragging on a bit in their segment, but it wrapped up well. Samoa Joe looked like a complete beast once again, but Randy Orton used Joe’s momentum to light a new level of interest into the Royal Rumble match. With his appearance and confirmation of participation in the match it really does become more interesting. Even Naomi and Mandy Rose put on an exciting and engaging match, and they are not the top names of the Smackdown Women’s Division. But when you put Rey Mysterio and Andrade in the ring together, magic happens. I could watch these two wrestle for the rest of 2019, and it looks like they can bring something new every time.
