Witnesses Tiffany Mitchell, Piaget Crenshaw detail Michael Brown shooting, journalists detained

The shocking details of the Michael Brown shooting continue to contradict the events explained by police. Witnesses spoke with CNN’s Don Lemon and paint the picture of an “unarmed boy” shot multiple times, even while surrendering.

“It looked as if Michael was pushing off and the cop was trying to pull him in,” Tiffany Mitchell told CNN on Wednesday night. This is the second witness who says Brown never entered the police cruiser as authorities claim he did.

Mitchell was picking up an employee for work when the pair witnessed the shooting. The employee, Piaget Crenshaw, also spoke with CNN, says she even took cell phone video.

It looked like the two of them were arm wrestling, she said. Neither woman, who gave their statements to St. Louis County police, say they saw Brown enter the vehicle. They also both claim a shot was fired, Brown ran free and the officers took after him.

“I saw the police chase him … down the street and shoot him down,” Crenshaw said. Brown ran about 20 feet. Michael jerks his body, as if he’s been hit,” Mitchell said.

Then he faced the officer and put his hands in the air, but the officer kept firing, both women said. He dropped to the pavement.

After that, Crenshaw hit record on her cell phone. News of the killing spread fast through the neighborhood, and Brown’s uncle walked up to the body to see if it was really his nephew, Crenshaw said.

The video shows police directing him back behind police tape.

Protesters are claiming the authorities are stonewalling on details which has led to even more violence. News photographers took snaps of young men lighting Molotov cocktails and found evidence of stun genades on the ground. Protests since Sunday have involved conflicts, arrests and looting.

Police detained a St. Louis alderman, Antonio French, who has posted a continuous stream of protest video to social media.

Two journalists covering civil unrest following a fatal shooting in Ferguson, Missouri, said they were briefly arrested Wednesday night inside a McDonald’s in the community.

Wesley Lowery of The Washington Post and Ryan J. Reilly of The Huffington Post said on Twitter that they were arrested while they were doing work and then released within roughly 45 minutes. Neither was charged.

“This was very unnecessary,” Lowery said in a telephone interview. He said he was never told why he and Reilly were detained, except that they were “trespassing” by being inside the fast-food restaurant.
