Will Smith may be returning for ‘Independence Day 2,’ but film may be delayed until 2016

Director Roland Emmerich is making a sequel to his smash-hit alien invasion blockbusterIndependence Day, even though it’s been twenty years.

Will Smith Independence Day Welcome to Earth lineRumored to be titled either ID Forever or just Independence Day 2. The story will pick-up in real time after the first installment, when the rest of the unfriendly extraterrestrial army – which has been traveling by wormhole since 1996 – makes its way to Earth, only to discover that humanity has managed to harness the aliens’ technology in their absence.

The biggest question and challenge is getting Will Smith back as the pilot Cpt. Steven Hiller and Emmerich is trying to get the Men in Black star locked in.

“I sometimes say no, Will Smith will not be in it because he didn’t want to do it at first. Now we have a meeting planned, we want to talk about it again. Anything can happen.”

Joining a massive list of films set for 2015, ID2 was set for the July 4th weekend, but may wait if it means Smith is part of the project.

Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum have already been officially confirmed to return for the sequel, which will be released in either 2015 or 2016.
