Wil Wheaton talks ‘Stand By Me,’ child actors and ‘The Big Bang Theory’

From Stand By Me as a breakout child role to Star Trek: The Next Generation to appearances on The Big Bang Theory, Wil Wheaton has created a legacy popular among “geeks and nerds.” Now Wheaton will get a chance to host his own show on SyFy, The Wil Wheaton Project, and talked with Larry King about the show and his famous roles.

“We all knew that Stand By Me was going to be something special. We all just felt it on the set. I don’t think any of us were prepared for it to become what it became,” said Wil. “[River Phoenix] felt everything and it’s what made him such a wonderful, wonderful actor.”

“I figured out really early on that there were kids in audition rooms who were there because it was fun to pretend, it was fun to make believe. Then there were kids whose parents wanted them to be famous. And there were kids who wanted to be famous. They weren’t doing it because they loved the art and weren’t doing it because they loved the make believe. They were doing it because it was thrust upon them.”

Why Wil likes to play evil Wil Wheaton on The Big Bang Theory.

“I just thought that the email was a joke from one of my friends so I just ignored it,” said Wil Wheaton about his first reaction to being invited onto Big Bang Theory. “In drama I play villains. My function in scripted entertainment is to be the guy you love to hate. It’s always more fun to be the villain.”

Wil Wheaton tells how he got the part of Wesley Crusher on Star Trek: The Next Generation. He opens up about his hobby — making home brew beer — and he also explains more about his upcoming show on SyFy, The Wil Wheaton Project, and why “it’s sort of like Talk Soup for nerds.”
