WHO tweets of MERS Coronavirus cluster in Abu Dhabi family

Although it hasn’t been officially reported by the World Health Organization (WHO) in their Disease Outbreak News as of this writing, the United Nations health agency and their chief public relations spokesperson have tweeted extensively about a cluster of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) in an Abu Dhabi family of three today.

According to the tweets by the WHO and the Head of Public Relations/Social Media for the agency, Gregory Hartl, the three cases from the United Arab Emirates include a 38-year-old father, the 32-year-old mother and an eight year old son from Abu Dhabi.

The WHO tweets the adults are both in critical condition while the woman gave birth to a newborn baby at the hospital. Mr. Hartl tweets that the baby has not tested positive for the MERS virus.

The 8-year-old boy is suffering only mild symptoms from the novel coronavirus.

The family has no history of recent travel, no contact with animals and no contact with a confirmed case, according to Hartl, “we don’t know how they got infected”.
