WHO: No new human H7N9 avian influenza infections recorded in over a week, four additional fatalities reported
The World Health Organization (WHO) said today that there has been no new laboratory-confirmed cases of human infection with avian influenza A(H7N9) reported from China or elsewhere since May 8. The number of cases remain at 131, including one in Taiwan.
However, four previously laboratory-confirmed cases have died since the last update, bringing the total fatalities to 36.
In addition to the case reported by Taipei CDC (with a history of recent travel from Jiangsu), cases have been reported from Anhui, Fujian, Henan, Hunan, Jiangsu, Jiangxi, Shandong and Zhejiang, and the municipalities of Beijing and Shanghai.
The WHO says cases have been reported in both sexes and across a wide range of ages, most cases have occurred among middle-aged and older men.
The UN health agency reports until the source of infection has been identified and controlled, it is expected that there will be further cases of human infection with the virus.
So far, there is no evidence of sustained human-to-human transmission.
