Westboro Baptist Church founder, Fred Phelps, dead at 84
The head of the church that protested just about everything and everyone, they even have a “picket schedule”, Fred Phelps died late Wednesday night from natural causes. He was 84.
Rev. Fred Phelps Sr. and the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kansas had its founding in 1955 consisting of family members through blood or marriage.
Westboro was notorious for two things–picketing people, events, funerals, whatever, in fact, the church has picketed more than 53,000 events from Carrie Underwood to Bill Cosby to Billy Graham to US servicemen.
Second, WBC was known for it’s condemnation of homosexuals. It’s website, God HatesFags.com has a plethora of anti-gay messages to include the following:
Perceiving the modern militant homosexual movement to pose a clear and present danger to the survival of America, exposing our nation to the wrath of God as in 1898 B.C. at Sodom and Gomorrah, WBC has conducted 52,336 such demonstrations since June, 1991, at homosexual parades and other events, including funerals of impenitent sodomites (like Matthew Shepard) and over 400 military funerals of troops whom God has killed in Iraq/Afghanistan in righteous judgment against an evil nation.
The Southern Poverty Law Center calls Westboro Baptist Church “arguably the most obnoxious and rabid hate group in America.”
Phelps was born in Meridian, Mississippi, on November 29, 1929. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Margie M. Simms and several children.
