Veteran Bollywood actor, Dilip Kumar, hospitalized in Mumbai
The veteran Bollywood actor, known as “the ultimate method actor”, was hospitalized Sunday night after reportedly suffering a heart attack.
90-year-old Dilip Kumar, was admitted to the Lilavati hospital in Mumbai, according to a BBC report. He is reportedly in stable condition.
Dilip, born Muhammad Yusuf Khan, has won more awards than any other Bollywood actor. Over his long career, he has won eight Filmfare awards, India’s version of the Oscars.
Known as the “Tragedy King”, Kumar’s acting career spanned six decades and over 60 films to include the romantic Andaz (1949), the swashbuckling Aan (1952), the dramatic Devdas(1955) to the more recent Shakti (1982), Karma (1986) and Saudagar (1991). His last film was Qila(1998).
The BBC reports that Kumar passed over a lead role in David Lean’s Lawrence of Arabia.
The part of Sherif Ali went to Egyptian actor Omar Sharif, who was nominated for an Oscar for the 1962 epic.
He is currently under observation in the hospital ICU.
