Verdi’s ‘Otello’ by The Met is an intense drama to captivate audiences

Giuseppe Verdi was coaxed out of retirement to write the opera Otello, an intense version of Shakespeare’s Othello. It premiered on February 5, 1887. The orchestra for this production was conducted by Yannick Nezet-Seguin. The Met Live has partnered with Fathom Events to stream their amazing productions in select theaters and Otello was the second feature in their 2015-2016 schedule.

Otello and Desdemona have married and are very happy. Otello’s ensign, Iago, is an evil man at heart. He feels slighted when Otello promotes another man, Cassio (Dimitri Pittas), to Captain instead of him. Because of this slight he swears to destroy Otello’s happiness.

Aleksandrs Antonenko as Otello pulled the audience into his downward spiral. You want to scream at him to think on his own. His cunning servant Iago, masterfully portrayed by Željko Lučić, manipulates Otello into seeing evil where it does not exist.  Sonya Yoncheva as the beautiful bride Desdemona can do nothing to uproot the seed of doubt planted by Iago. When she sings the Ave Maria in the final act, saying goodbye to her life, every heart breaks with hers.

The three leading roles of this opera are highly demanding, both dramatically and vocally, which could be seen in a short interview during the intermission. After bellowing line after line without so much as a single gasp the actors could scarcely form words off stage. Seeing this classic opera is a treat that opera lovers should add to their bucket list.

Overall Otello by The Met receives 4 out of 5 stars!
