‘Venom’: Tom Hardy training video, Mark Mene says it’s one of the ‘darkest, most powerful supervillains’ ever
Production on Sony’s Venom movie is currently underway and is expected to bring an updated take on the iconic Spider-Man villain. Tom Hardy (Mad Max Fury Road, The Dark Knight Rises) will play the titular character with an appearance of Carnage teased by the creators.
Hardy’s trainer for the upcoming movie, Mark Mene, recently revealed in a new interview a few details about the kind of character fans can expect to see next year.
Mene states that Hardy’s Venom will be a violent beast in the 2018 adaptation, bringing fans closer to a proper comic book adaptation.
“What the world is going to see is one of the darkest, most powerful supervillains that Marvel has ever created. It’s going to be carnage.”

Epic Stream states the Venom storyline will be drawn from the Lethal Protector stories in the comics. If this is true, the symbiote will have been artificially constructed, as opposed to coming from outer space. In the comics, Brock battles with the idea of suicide as he is suffering from cancer. The artificial symbiote suit was created to cure diseases, so it’s possible Brock takes on the suit voluntarily, as opposed to being overcome by it.
Also set for the film is Carnage.
Carnage is Cletus Kasady, a serial killer who merged with the offspring of the alien symbiote Venom and resulted in an amplification of his already-psychotic nature. Carnage seems like a perfect fit for the “extreme” trend that permeated comics in the ’90s: he’s sort of like Venom, but blood red and much crazier and way more hardcore.
Venom will be the first film in Sony’s Marvel universe and will be followed by Silver and Black. Sony’s films are separate to the Marvel Cinemaitc Universe, which means it’s highly unlikely that Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock will be swinging alongside Spider-Man anytime soon.
Venom will be directed by Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) and will also star Jenny Slate (voice actor in Zootopia, The Secret Life of Pets, The LEGO Batman movie), Michelle Williams (Shutter Island, Manchester by the Sea), Riz Ahmed (Rogue One, Jason Bourne, Nightcrawler), Reid Scott (Veep), Michelle Lee, Scott Haze (Thank You For Your Service), Kayko Thompson, Grace Wan, Jared Bankens, Apollo GT and Paul Pillsbury.
Venom opens October 5, 2018.
