Vaping Backed by Science as Healthier Alternative to Cigarettes
After successful completion of the first long-term study on the effects of vaping on your health, experts have given e-cigarettes the thumbs up as an alternative to smoking cigarettes. A fairly new form of nicotine replacement therapy, vaping is popular today with both smokers and non-smokers. It has long been thought of as a healthier and alternative to smoking, since it allows ex-smokers to continue to ‘smoke’ without nicotine withdrawal symptoms or inhaling dangerous chemicals such as carbon monoxide and tar. Here are some of the main things found by the six-month study.
Switching to Vaping Improves Health
After six months, smokers in the study who switched to vaping were found to have far fewer toxins in their bodies and less cancerous substances than those who continued to smoke traditional cigarettes. This result finally debunked past claims made that vaping may be just as harmful to your health as smoking, and experts hope that it will encourage more smokers to quit using an e-cigarette.
Vaping Reduces Your Risk of Lung Cancer
For smokers, the risk of getting lung cancer is very real and scary, with a huge percentage of lung cancer cases across the world related to smoking cigarettes. According to the study, smokers who switched to vaping for just six months had 97% less of the toxic chemical NNAL in their bodies, which is strongly linked to lung cancer. Other cancer-linked substances, known as volatile organic compounds, were also significantly less in those who switched to vaping for six months.
It’s Important to Make a Clean Break
Scientists stressed that the result of the study made it clear that only those who made a clean break from smoking to vaping reaped the health benefits. If you are considering switching to vaping, smoking a cigarette occasionally isn’t going to be as harmful, but those who continue smoking regularly whilst vaping, even if they cut down on cigarettes, are unlikely to see much health improvement. Since e-liquid comes in different levels of nicotine, most vapers don’t suffer from nicotine cravings.
Advice for Staying On Track
If you have decided to quit smoking and switch to vaping, there are many things that can help you stay on track and give up the cigarettes for good. For example, using a local stop smoking support group is a good way to meet like-minded people and openly discuss any quitting-related problems that you’re having. You can also download apps onto your smartphone or tablet that are designed to help you quit smoking and track your progress, which will motivate you to continue. It’s also a good idea to prepare for temptations, for example, having two e-cigarettes (or a spare battery) and making sure that you always have plenty of e-liquid available so that you don’t have to turn to a cigarette to curb a craving.
It has been confirmed by science: vaping is a safer, cleaner alternative to smoking.

It’s a nice article and I really appreciate the objective presentation of the facts.
But the second sentence
indicates that author is probably “suffering” from a common case of professional tunnel vision: Regarding exclusively the potential use of vaping as a cessation tool and thus missing the whole picture.
I elaborated on it in my blog: Vaping vs NRT
This focus also posed a hidden, but serious danger: Medicalisation
From this point of view it seems only natural to harness vaping with medical regulation to improve its efficacy, safety etc.
The road to hell is paved with good intentions. This is one of them. Putting vaping into this straight jacket will eliminate all those ignored aspects that make vaping so successful in real life. You can observe this in some RCTs that have been performed to evaluate the “efficacy” of ecigs compared to NRTs. Well, in those tests they performed slightly better than NRTs, but still leagues away from real life success rate. The reason is simple: Crippling Control!
When I first heard about ecigs they were only mentioned in the context of “smoking cessation”, together with gums andf patches. Like in this article. Since I had no intention to quit, I files this information away as “Another cessation gimmick, probably just as vile and useless as all its brethren.”
About 5 years ago so-called “cessation experts” started flinging obvious bovine excrement against ecigs. That made me curious. I tried vaping. I still prefer it. More details in My Story.
Yes, vaping much healthier than smoking.
Yes, vaping may be used like an NRT.
No, vaping is not just another cessation tool!
Yes, vaping is a consumer product than can be more enjoyable than smoking!
Not all stop smoking services have bothered to get thorough first hand information on vaping like Stop Smoking Leicester. So, some may not really be a help when switching to vaping. In these cases it might be more helpful to contact experienced vapers. In forums or vape shops. They know the usual problems and how to solve them.
Carl,
There is nothing that I could find about about the toxicity or any serious dangers to inhaling propylene glycol as you allege.
In the ten years people have been using ecigs there has never been a reported advers reaction to the FDA or OSHA that I could find or am aware of. Their is zero property damage from simple use. When people don’t lean how to use the batteries that some devices require properly you will have accidents and most of those are simply user error. Everything you said is just propaganda by a person/group who hates people who can find enjoyment in smoking or vaping and the personal decision to exercise a choice people willfully claim is “dangerous”.
That is absolute nonsense. Without trying ecigs many people would still be smoking. How many times should they have to try and fail? None! Ecigs work and save lives by working so well!
The first studies of inhaling synthetic fog, aka e-cig “vapor”, were actually done long ago. Occupational safety authorities have known for decades that emissions from synthetic fog machines for theatrical performances and special effects are dangerous to inhale, and that they electrically heat propylene glycol/glycerin the same way e-cigarettes do. Add to that the fact that e-cigarettes often inflict property damage, third degree burns and ballistic trauma when they explode; that they emit some of the same carcinogens and toxins in tobacco smoke; that they emit some toxins and carcinogens not even found in tobacco smoke (chromium, glycidol), and enough is already known for the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission to block e-cigarette importation plus order e-cigarette recalls.
Supposedly over 450,000 smokers die each year in the USA. The 30,000 doctors at the Royal College of Physicians say to promote vaping to smokers! https://www.rcplondon.ac.uk/news/promote-e-cigarettes-widely-substitute-smoking-says-new-rcp-report
Wonderful fearmongering Carl. Are you a scientist? Are you disputing the scientific evidence from a six month longitudinal study with vague generalized statements like comparing a personal vaporizer to a fog machine? Are you at least willing to acknowledge that vaping is safer than smoking? If there’s a healthier alternative to help billions of smokers quit a habit that they haven’t been able to break by any other means, then I believe the government has a moral obligation to offer harm reduction alternatives.
Carl, nice try. But the fear-mongering falls woefully short in light of ALL RELIABLE scientific research.
