US State Department issues travel warning for the Philippines
Following in the steps of Canada and Australia earlier this week, The US Department of State has issued a travel warning to the Philippines Friday.
State department officials warn U.S. citizens of the risks of travel to the Philippines, in particular to the Sulu Archipelago and the island of Mindanao.
“U.S. citizens should continue to defer non-essential travel to the Sulu Archipelago, due to the high threat of kidnapping of international travelers and violence linked to insurgency and terrorism there, the advisory states.
“U.S. citizens should continue to exercise extreme caution if traveling to the island of Mindanao in the Southern Philippines. Throughout Mindanao, criminal groups have clashed sporadically with the Philippine Armed Forces, particularly in rural areas, and terrorist groups have kidnapped international travelers and carried out bombings that have resulted in injuries and deaths. In Cotabato City, and in the Maguindanao and Sultan Kudarat provinces, the government maintains a state of emergency that compels a greater police presence in those areas.”
Similar warnings were made by the Canadian and Australian couterparts this week.
The Canadian government said, Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada advises against all travel to the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (consisting of Basilan, Sulu, Tawi Tawi, Lanao del Sur and Maguindanao), as well as to the Zamboanga Peninsula, Zamboanga del Sur, Sarangani, Lanao del Norte, Davao, North and South Cotabato, and Sultan Kudarat, due to the serious threat of terrorist attacks and kidnapping.
While the Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said, “We continue to strongly advise you not to travel to central and western Mindanao, including Zamboanga Peninsula and Sulu Archipelago, due to the very high threat of terrorist attack, kidnapping, violent crime and violent clashes between armed group. We continue to advise you to reconsider your need to travel to eastern Mindanao.”
U.S. citizens traveling to or residing in the Philippines should review the Department of State’s Country Specific Information for the Philippines, which contains additional information about conditions throughout the country.
