Universal sets release dates for ‘Despicable Me 3’ ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’ and Garth Jennings film
Universal has announced three new animated feature films from their Illumination Entertainment.
First up is a film from director Garth Jennings (Son of Rambow) in an untitled animated feauture – “original animated comedy event about courage, competition and carrying a tune.”
Jennings directed The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy in 2005 which starred Martin Freeman and several popular commercials.
The Jennings film will arrive in theaters on December 21, 2016.
No surprise is Despicable Me 3, a sequel 2013’s third-highest grossing feature will open on June 30, 2017.
Illumination Entertainment is also doing a “A newly imagined version of the enduring holiday classic” How the Grinch Stole Christmas, which will be released on November 17, 2017.
The picture will be directed by Pete Candeland from an adaptation by Michael LeSieur (You, Me and Dupree). Candeland’s credits include All Dogs Go To Heaven 2 and Harmonix: The Beatles — Rock Band.
Deadline noted the cramped scheduling: “DM3′s release is set for two weeks after both Disney/Pixar and Fox/DWA/Blue Sky have untitled projects set for release (June 16, 2017). Also, Grinch is set for five days before the bow of an untitled Pixar toon.”
