Uganda Virus Research institute can now test for Ebola, Marburg
The Commissioner Clinical Services in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Jacinto Amandua said that Uganda will no longer have to ship samples abroad for testing for serious viral diseases like Ebola and Marburg, according to a report from the Ugandan news source, New Vision Friday.
The Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) in Entebbe, in response to the ministry’s bid to promote epidemic response, now has the diagnostic capability to test for some of the most lethal virus known, viruses seen in Uganda in outbreaks like Ebola Marburg and yellow fever.
In recent months, Uganda has experienced outbreaks of Ebola in Kibaale and Luweero districts where dozens were killed, and a Marburg outbreak, also in the Kibaale district.
Improving the country’s epidemic preparedness and response to these types of outbreaks was one of the recommendations of the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) report.
