UConn logo of Huskies becomes new rape meme after one student complains

The general complaint in the student body is that the new husky logo that UConn unveiled earlier this month is simply unimpressive. One student’s complaint; however, has led to the logo being associated with “rape” and now starting a new “rape meme.”

Carolyn Luby, a student majoring in Women’s Gender & Sexuality Studies, wrote an open letter to UConn President Susan Herbst via thefeministwire.com, claiming that the school’s new mascot is frightening for young women.

“Well President Herbst, the new Husky logo may not be capable of frightening small children, but the face of real life UConn athletics is certainly capable of frightening college women.”

She also criticizes a quote from Geno Auriemma, in which he praised the new logo for showing “fight.”

“It is looking right through you and saying, ‘Do not mess with me.’ This is a streamlined, fighting dog, and I cannot wait for it to be on our uniforms and court.~Geno Auriemma stated about the new logo change.”

In the letter, Luby takes exception to the school’s focus on its new visual identity, saying the administration should instead be focusing on cleaning up its athletics programs.

She goes on to list four separate examples, including the school’s APR scores and recent domestic violence issues.

Critics, including Rush Limbaugh, are outraged at the comparison and that one student’s voice may be so influential.

In other circles, she is described as heroic, nothing that “As part of this anti-feminist backlash targeting a female student daring to speak in defense of safety for women, the site, Barstool Sports reposted her letter, which generated the predictably violent and misogynistic gender-based comments,” writes Huff Po.

“Rush Limbaugh has weighed in to mock her, minimize the real threat and actuality of violence against women, and mumbled in his tired old patriarchal patois about Feminazis and cartoon characters.  I will not link to anything he says or does because it is usually infused with a mean-spirited, dangerous ignorance and darkness, and I like information rooted in truth that sheds light and makes the world a better place.”

The article might be off a bit. The new logo itself isn’t starting a meme, the girl said it resembles the meme, Insanity Wolf.

  5. Barbayat says:

Wow, you totally lack reading comprehension – the letter says nothing about the logo being frightening. To name just wrong falsehood.

But I guess, it’s fun misrepresenting what a feminist says to make her look bad and gloss over the real issue being addressed, isn’t it?

    • jen says:

The REAL issue? the REAL issue is that some people like to complain about stuff that has nothing to do with the reason they complain. what does a mascot have to do with rape? its a dog! I mean unless she was raped by a dog i see no reason for her fake outrage.

Is this for real?!?! What is wrong with people?! It promotes rape and is frightening to women?! What kind of world are we living in?! It’s a dog for crying out loud!!! Ok people are really taking things too far. If anybody listens to these people then they are mentally ill.

  8. josh says:

This woman is insane.Plain and simple this is a logo that has nothing to do with rape. one person who is a womens and genders study major (that should say enough right there) who finds offense in a cartoon dog. Thats it. no one else thinks it has anything to do with what she believes. As for the mean comments directed towards her, while they are uncalled for, and are way over the top, but so was the initial reaction by this young woman
