Trump caves and ends government shutdown for 3 weeks to ‘negotiate’ with Pelosi, Democrats
“Good news for George Herbert Walker Bush: As of today, he is no longer the biggest wimp ever to serve as President of the United States,” tweeted Ann Coulter in the wake of the news that the government shutdown ended after President Trump caved to the demands of the Democrats to negotiate AFTER the government was back up and running.
Trump said from the White House Rose Garden that federal workers affected by the political standoff, whom he called “incredible patriots”, would receive full back-pay.
Trump never really explained his motivations and the dynamics of the immigration crisis during the shutdown.
An ABC News/Washington Post poll finds that only 37% of Americans approve of the job President Donald Trump is doing. A significantly higher 58% disapprove. This makes for a net approval rating of -21 points.
The previous ABC/Washington Post poll put Trump’s net approval rating at -13 points, so his net approval rating fell by 8 points.
On Twitter, Trump said the deal to temporarily reopen government was “in no way a concession” on the wall. Trump indicated he might trigger another shutdown or declare a national emergency if his demands are not met.
The Republican president has vowed to reject any budget unless Congress includes $5.7bn to fund his signature campaign pledge.
The Democratic Party, which controls the House of Representatives, has flatly refused.
In a video message to agents on Friday, FBI Director Christopher Wray said: “I’m about as angry as I’ve been in a long, long time.”
Of the shutdown’s effects on his agency, he said: “It’s mind-boggling, it’s short-sighted, and it’s unfair.”
