Top Tips for Drivers on Graduating Licensing in Canada

Many provinces in Canada have adopted a graduating licensing system that requires beginning drivers to rack up driving time before they can obtain their full-fledged license. Canada has about fifteen different licenses that relate to various types of vehicles. Beginning drivers must earn their learners permit, which is more formally known as the G1 license. While each province determines it own rules regarding its licensing programs, most adhere to the following information.

How to Obtain Your G1 License in Canada

Many young wanna-be drivers begin to study up on Canada’s rules of the road before they turn sixteen when they are generally eligible to obtain their G1 license. According to the Government of Canada, it is ideal for young drivers to take a ministry approved drivers course while studying their rules of the road manual. The class and manual prepares young drivers for taking the written exam that will allow them to obtain their G1 license. You should also plan to read up the licensing requirements associated with your province.

Canadian citizens need to prove their identity before they can procure their G1 license. You will need to bring certain documents with you to the drive test center such as a passport, Canadian citizenship card (with photo), or a Secure Certificate of Indian Status Card. It’s a good idea to call the test center before heading there so you bring the appropriate documentation for the province where you are applying for your license. You should also plan to check the fees associated with licensing in your province.

The G License

Once you have passed the written exam and the eye exam, you may be awarded your G1 license. In the case of the Ontario G1 Test, young drivers will not be able to obtain their permanent license until driving with the G1 license for a year. The G1 license allows drivers to build up their driving skills and master the rules of the road. If you should move while still driving with a G1 license, you may be required to test again in the province you move to. It’s important for drivers to remember that they may not drive alone with their G1 license. The learning permit states that the driver must be accompanied by someone aged 25 or older who has a full-fledged Canadian driver’s license.

After the G1

Once you’ve driven for the required amount of time with your G1 license, you’ll be eligible to test and earn your G2 license. The exam for the G2 license is a driving test, but you won’t be eligible to take it unless you’ve done well with your G1 license. For instance, you shouldn’t have racked up any citations for driving between restricted hours (12 AM and 5 AM) or failing to maintain a zero blood alcohol level.

The G1 license is a big step in the life of the driver. Just keep in mind that this license will become part of your driving record. If you have any questions about the license, be sure to contact the driver’s test center for your area.
