Top Reasons for Florida Accidents

Traffic accidents in Florida are a communal problem. In fact, Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles reports that there were 374,342 traffic crashes in 2015 alone. The causes of these accidents vary, but certain causes are much more common than others. The following are some of the top causes of motor vehicle accidents in the Sunshine State.

Distracted Drivers

Driving while distracted, such as when drivers text or talk on their cell phone, is one of the main reasons that traffic accidents occur and why many of those drivers end up taking FL traffic school online. Other kinds of distractions that can lead to accidents in Florida include eating food and dealing with kids in the backseat while driving. Even a momentary lapse of attention while operating a car or other vehicle can result in a serious accident with potentially fatal injuries, so it’s crucial to avoid distractions as much as possible.

Speeding

Going over the speed limit is another common cause of car accidents. Driving at higher speeds typically leads to more serious accidents than driving at lower speeds due to the impact that occurs during the collision. Avoid going over the speed limit, which increases your risk of losing control of your vehicle or not having enough time to prevent a collision from occurring. Keep in mind that speeding is a moving violation that puts points on driver’s licenses and will probably entice you to find out how to check your traffic ticket online.

Driving Under the Influence

Driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol is a leading cause of fatal traffic accidents. Those who are convicted of driving while intoxicated can end up losing their license temporarily and being ordered to go to traffic school before they can get it reinstated. Even having a small amount of alcohol or drugs can be enough to impair judgement and put drivers and passengers at risk. Avoid getting behind the wheel after drinking or being under the influence of drugs.

Tailgating

Being too close behind other vehicles, also known as tailgating, can cause serious accidents. Tailgating gives drivers less time to react to situations that can lead to collisions, such as when the car in front suddenly slams on the brakes. This results in a front-end collision for the tailgater, which can lead to potentially fatal injuries. Tailgating is even more dangerous in adverse weather conditions when visibility is limited or when roads are slippery.

Failure to Yield the Right of Way

Running through a stop sign or red light or cutting another driver off causes numerous accidents in Florida. Failing to give other drivers the right of way can lead to accidents involving several vehicles, especially if the collision occurs on a busy highway or at an intersection. Drivers should always yield the right of way to other vehicles on the road to prevent these kinds of collisions from occurring.

Road Rage

Road rage involves acting aggressively while driving, which can easily result in motor vehicle accidents. Those who give into road rage can’t pay full attention to their surroundings, and they’re more likely to take serious risks that endanger themselves and other drivers. Staying calm on the road, no matter what other drivers do, helps reduce the risk of road rage accidents.

Lack of Maintenance

Driving with brakes, tires or other vehicle parts that are in bad shape can lead to minor or major collisions. These accidents sometimes affect only one vehicle, but they can also result in accidents involving several vehicles. Keeping motor vehicles regularly maintained helps prevent these accidents from happening.
