Deadline reports that Borenstein’s deal with Legendary has already closed. Details on the overall plot of the new Godzilla film haven’t been revealed, but kaiju teased at Legendary’s Comic-Con panel include Rodan, Mothra, and Ghidorah. Borenstein is set to write the Kong prequel as well.
Hiddleston will be joined by The Kings Of Summer helmer Jordan Vogt-Robert and will be set almost entirely upon the titular island, on which Kong and a whole host of other extraordinary creatures will be found.
“Previous works have touched on the island,” reads the official release, “but staying on and exploring this mysterious and dangerous place offers Legendary the opportunity to take audiences deeper inside this rich world.”
Legendary and Warner Bros. always hoped for Godzilla to launch a new franchise and now we seeing them prime the pump to jump start King Kong stories as well.
Collider published the entire presser: “Legendary announced its plans to make a feature film based on the cinematic origins of King Kong during this year’s San Diego Comic Con with an original draft of the script by Max Borenstein. Previous works have touched on the island, but staying on and exploring this mysterious and dangerous place offers Legendary the opportunity to take audiences deeper inside this rich world with a style and scope that parallels other Legendary productions.”
Director Gareth Edwards will also return for Godzilla 2. Godzilla 2 is scheduled to open June 8, 2018. The plan right now is for Edwards to finish up his Star Wars spin-off, dated for 2016, and then immediately jump into Godzilla 2.
Skull Island opens on November 4th, 2016.
