Tom Cruise set to star and produce a reboot of Universal’s ‘Van Helsing’
Universal is tapping into their vault of famous monsters again, this time signing Tom Cruise to produce and star in a Van Helsing film.
Variety reported Tuesday that Universal is planning to use “their vault to best utilize their properties strategically,” much in the way Marvel has overlapped their films.
The writing duo of Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (who were also just tapped to re-write Amazing Spider-Man 2) will be writing the script and are also set to breathe new life into The Mummy franchise.
Universal issued a statement which publicly praised the writing team.
“Alex and Roberto are extraordinarily talented writers and producers who know the value of a great story in building successful tentpole films. They have been a major part of some of Hollywood’s biggest movies and television shows in recent history, and we’re eager to have them build on that success at Universal.”
The 2004 Van Helsing starred Hugh Jackman and Kate Beckinsale is viewed as a failure by critics even though it earned well at the box office. Universal is hopeful that a reboot can ignite interest the monsters and subsequent films can be cranked out.
