The women were caught Saturday after arriving on Colombia’s Caribbean island of San Andres on a flight from Bogota.
They thought the disguise would spare them from being searched. But their habits were shabby and the women acted nervously, which gave them away, said San Andres police chief Jorge Gomez.
Police Capt. Oscar Davila saw three nuns acting weird after landing on the Caribbean island of San Andres. He then realized their habits was not made of the appropriate fabric.
Each woman reportedly had over 4 pounds of the drug taped to their body. They all burst into tears and began giving police “tales of financial hardship,” and naturally, not one of the three is an actual nun.
All were arrested early Saturday and jailed on drug trafficking charges.
Authorities report that dozens of people are caught monthly attempting to smuggle drugs out of the country.
