Think Ski Season Is Over? Head South And Extend The Adventure

Skiing ranks among the ultimate luxury vacations, but with winter at its end in such popular locales as Courchevel, France and Vale, Colorado and, you may think it’s time to retire your poles until cooler weather returns. But don’t despair – there’s a whole other hemisphere to explore. If you want to extend your ski season, consider these 3 incredible Southern Hemisphere destinations for what you might call summer skiing.

The Resort Experience – Thredbo, Australia

When choosing a vacation destination, we can’t exactly go visit and look around before booking our stay – we have to go by the advertisements, the accommodations, lists, and activity photos shared by the booking site regional webpage. With that in mind, then, the Thredbo Resort in Australia is all about truth in advertising – it delivers on the excitement it promises.

Thredbo on its own is a tiny town of only about 500 people, but the resort boasts 500 acres of ski trails, a Kids Club for your youngsters, and a town packed with nightlife and dining options. Of course, since Thredbo is a full-service resort, you could stay on-site and have a great time, but you’ll want to get out and explore the shops and visit the famed Schuss Bar.

Go Big – Las Lenas, Argentina

For the adventurers out there, Las Lenas is something of a pilgrimage site – but a tricky one. Because the mountains are so big, the upper portions are often closed due to storms. In order to be sure you’ll get to ski some serious slopes, you need to book a longer trip. The horror – a long vacation!

Seriously, though, Las Lenas is designed for expert skiers, though they’ll accommodate the less advanced among us. Any resort where the chairlift is an attraction in itself is one you just can’t miss.

Lord Of The Slopes – The Remarkables, New Zealand

Love the slopes and a good fantasy novel? Then maybe you’d like to head to The Remarkables near Queensland in New Zealand. A particularly good destination for snowboarders, The Remarkables are also where the Lord of the Rings movies were filmed.

The Remarkables are an ideal location for winter sports enthusiasts who don’t take themselves too seriously. It’s the sort of place where you’ll find athlete battles on the slopes, outdoor music, and more. It’s also a great destination for families, with a wide variety of sloes ranging from beginner level runs to black paths and neighboring the slightly more traditional Coronet Peak, owned by the same company.

The Southern hemisphere is home to a number of incredible mountain ranges that are perfect for skiing, so don’t put your skis away just because summer is on the horizon up here in the north. Skiing can be a year round pursuit if you’re a determined world traveler.
