‘The Nun’ star Demián Bichir cast and Brian Tyree Henry in ‘Godzilla vs King Kong’ still set for 2020

Legendary’s MonsterVerse has another chapter, Godzilla vs. Kong, and his making news by adding cast member. Demián Bichir, an actor who appeared in The Hateful Eight and the recently released The Nun, has joined the Adam Wingard-directed film.

Brian Tyree Henry landed an Emmy nomination for his role in the FX series Atlanta, and now he’s joining the monster fest which will follow the upcoming Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and will pit the rebooted Kong from Kong: Skull Island against the rebooted Godzilla introduced in Gareth Edwards’ 2014 film.

Collider has the news about Bichir joining the Godzilla vs. Kong cast with Variety stating that Henry’s role will apparently be significant.

The new film stars Millie Bobby Brown, Kyle Chandler and Zhang Ziyi, who appear in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, along with Danai Gurira and Julian Dennison.

The specific details about Godzilla vs. Kong are still under wraps. Regarding the upcoming movie, director Adam Wingard said:

“I really want you to take those characters seriously. I want you to be emotionally invested, not just in the human characters, but actually in the monsters. It’s a massive monster brawl movie. There’s lots of monsters going crazy on each other, but at the end of the day I want there to be an emotional drive to it. I want you to be emotionally invested in them. I think that’s what’s going to make it really cool.”

Wingard, who directed The GuestDeath Note and more, also added:

“I do want there to be a winner. The original film was very fun, but you feel a little let down that the movie doesn’t take a definitive stance. People are still debating now who won in that original movie, you know. So, I do want people to walk away from this film feeling like, Okay, there is a winner.”

Godzilla vs. Kong opens on May 22, 2020.

King of the Monsters will be bringing King Ghidorah, Mothra, and Rodan into the fold, and Dougherty says the film does Rodan justice after the character has played sidekick to Godzilla in previous features.

“Rodan’s been kind of a sidekick character, but I’ve always had a soft spot for him” says Dougherty. “In a lot of ways he’s more powerful than Godzilla. He’s like this winged A-bomb. I think we’ve done him justice.” But let’s not forget Godzilla himself, who reveals he has the ability to exhale “atomic breath.” Can Dougherty expand on that description? “Not without giving away too much,” he laughs. “But it takes place at a very key moment and it’s a sort of call to arms.”

The EW coverage provides a ton of details: Dr. Emma Russell (Vera Farmiga), a scientist working for the beastie-hunting organization Monarch, and her daughter Madison (Brown). The pair are kidnapped by what Dougherty describes as “a mysterious organization, with their own plans for the creatures.”

Kyle Chandler has been cast as Mark Russell, Emma’s ex-husband and Madison’s father, who embarks on a rescue mission in cahoots with two more Monarch members, Watanabe and Hawkins.

Farmiga teased her character’s role: “She has figured out a way to communicate with the creatures and potentially control them using their bioacoustics on a sonar level. So she is like a DJ for the monsters.”

King Ghidorah is being played (via the magic of motion capture) by Jason Liles, along with 2 other actors for each of the heads. Other new cast: Bradley Whitford, O’Shea Jackson and Zhang Ziyi, Aisha Hinds (Star Trek Into Darkness), Charles Dance (Game of Thrones), Thomas Middleditch (Silicon Valley) and Randy Havens (Stranger Things).
