The Importance of Garden Railings and Perimeter Fences

Security is a significant issue for many homeowners these days and putting up a perimeter fence around a property appears to be a sound choice if you want to deter trespassers from entering your property. Apart from this, having a perimeter fence also helps prevent those who are inside from leaving the property accidentally. A good example is if you have pets or young children and you want to ensure that they don’t run into the street when left unattended. Another purpose of installing a fence is to protect your property’s landscape and garden if you are maintaining one.

There are a host of other uses for installing fences and railings. Garden railings, for example, protect plants from the elements and animals. They can also help you create different zones within your garden. There are different types of garden fence and railings to choose from. Some of the most common are:

  • Metal railings. These are decorative and durable railings made from steel or wrought iron which you can install on their own, or on top of a wall.
  • Wooden panels. These are pre-fabricated panels which are ready for installation. You can choose from a variety of sizes, designs, and shapes.
  • Wooden boards. These are boards made of timber which you can install as an enclosure for your property.

Apart from deciding what type of material you want for your fence or garden railings, there are other factors you need to consider as well.

What is the purpose of installing the garden rails or fence?

Garden railings aren’t typically installed for security. More often than not, the purpose is to create a barrier for the landscape to protect vegetation, and in some cases prevent small animals from damaging plants. This is why you can often see railings in public gardens. Now, if you are looking for a fence or railing that will serve as a border for your property, choose a tall and solid fence for enhanced privacy and safety. For creating different zones or areas within your garden, decorative walls and metal railings will suffice.

What is a suitable height and size for a fence?

The height and size of the fence depend on your preference. Would you like the option to see over it, or would you instead have the fence completely cover your property and keep prying eyes out? If you want enhanced security but won’t mind being able to look out once in a while, you can opt for a shorter fence and add extra railings above for protection. Metal railings on top of brick or cement fence often lend a sophisticated look to any property. The advantage of choosing metal over other materials like wood is that metal is more durable and easier to maintain.

On the other hand, if you want a more traditional appearance for your property fence and are considering wood, look for a supplier which offers wooden fences that have been treated to protect against wear and tear and ensures that your wooden fence will last a long time.
