‘The Hunger Games Catching Fire’ movie review: ‘Just as good as the book’

Going into this movie I had very low expectations. Having read the books I thought the first book was better than the movie. Most of the time when it comes to book adaptations, the books are just better. This is usually because they can’t keep all the details and have to shorten the story for the two hour time limit.

Jennifer Lawrence Katniss Hunger Games Catching Fire posterWith that said, I was happily surprised when the movie was, dare I say it, just as good as the book.

They kept the important details, the characters were properly developed, and the timing was just right. I was impressed at how much more I liked this sequel compared to the first movie.

Now in this film, all of the characters are back to show what happened after the Hunger Games. Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) has become a beacon of hope for the districts under capitol rule. Her actions of rebellion to save Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) and herself sparked a fire that has been brewing for a while. This enrages the President (Donald Sutherland) because he can’t have his people rebelling in fear of losing his power.

He tells Katniss to pretend that her reason for saving both them is because of her unmerited love for Peeta. President Snow believes this will put out the fire of rebellion that has begun. But even her lies cannot put out the fire of the districts who crave freedom.

People look to Katniss and she gives everyone courage to stand up for themselves. But of course, the capital can’t have that. They must find a way to eliminate Katniss and other victors like her who have given hope to the districts. A perfect way to get rid of them is the 75th Hunger Games.

Every 25 years, The Hunger Games has a little twist.

But conveniently for this Quarter Quell, the tributes are reaped from previous victors. Since Katniss is the only living female victor from her district, then she will be going into the games again no matter what. The male tribute that will go in with her from her district is unknown. The only two options are Peeta and her mentor Haymitch.

But what does this mean for the rebelling districts?

What will happen to the star-crossed lovers?

This movie is great for fans of the books (not appropriate for children under 13), and others who just want to watch the movie. It is filled with action, suspense and romance. I laughed, and I cried. The overall meaning and theme of this series is why I’m a fan. It will without a doubt keep you on the edge of your seat, and it will get you excited for the third movie.

Overall The Hunger Games: Catching Fire receives 4 1/2 out of 5 stars
