‘The Crow’ reboot: Relativity bankrupt, film rights questioned, director Corin Hardy out

The Crow remake has been in trouble, even before Relativity Media filed for bankruptcy, but now director Corin Hardy’s exit signals a longer delay or a halt altogether.

Will a reboot of "The Crow" ever happen?

Will a reboot of “The Crow” ever happen?

The Hollywood Reporter reported that Edward R. Pressman Film Corporation, which produced the 1994 cult adaptation of the comic, have filed papers in court in order to deny Relativity any sequel, prequel, or remake rights to the film. Now that Dana Brunetti joined Relativity and took over the creative reins, Hardy has departed the picture.

Hardy was on a holding deal for $150,000, signed this past November to stick with the project with an eye on a March production date, but Brunetti will likely want a new vision, leaving behind the old regime.

JoBlo even said this exact thing: “This will allow Brunetti to put his own stamp on the high-priority reboot over at Relativity and not be stuck with what someone from a previous regime envisioned.”

The THR report appear to confirm that the film rights may have expired or Relativity only has one more year to start production. Pressman alleges that once Dana Brunetti came on board to run Relativity Media earlier this year, he fired Hardy from the project, violating the initial agreement regarding The Crow film rights.

As for Relativity, they’re standing behind Brunetti despite Pressman’s lack of confidence in the production company. As CEO Ryan Kavanaugh stated:

“With Dana coming aboard, we are giving him full creative rein. We want him to be able to reboot The Crow under his vision and guidance. We are optimistic he will create the best package for such an iconic franchise.”

For fans: the wait continues and court cases may cause an extended delay. Stay tuned as details emerge. The earliest new Crow film could be imagined is likely 2018 or 2019.
