‘The Americans’ season 3: Frank Langella cast as handler for Matthew Rhys, Keri Russell

Actor Frank Langella has been cast for a recurring role on the third season of FX’s Cold War drama The Americans.

Langella will play Gabriel, Philip (Matthew Rhys) and Elizabeth’s (Keri Russell) former KGB handler who comes out of retirement to take back responsibility for overseeing these two KGB operatives from their previous handler, Claudia (Margo Martindale).

“We’ve been huge fans of Frank’s work for a long time, and it’s been such a pleasure getting to know Frank himself in the beginning stages of working together on the character of Gabriel,” said Executive Producers Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields. “We look forward to a great season together, and to what we’re sure will be a phenomenal creative collaboration.”

The Academy Award nominee, three-time Tony Award winner Langella has three upcoming feature films set for release in 2015: the romance 5 to 7 opposite Anton Yelchin and Glenn Close, The Driftless Area with Zooey Deschanel, and Captain Fantastic opposite Viggo Mortensen.

Set in the 1908’s, season three will be set against the Afghanistan War, focus on the pressure from the KGB to train and use Phillip and Elizabeth’s daughter Paige to gain information.

“I think there are so many layers for this moment as a mother for Elizabeth watching this daughter be of the age that she was when she began [working for the K.G.B.],” Russell said of this plot point during the NYCC panel last weekend.

Season 3 of The Americans will premiere on FX in January or February of 2015.
