Thanksgiving Safety Tips from ‘Duck Dynasty’ stars Jase Robertson and Uncle Si Robertson

Thanksgiving may be a great day to reflect and be grateful for the blessing in our lives, but it is also the day of the highest amount of cooking fires, according to the National Fire Protection Association.

Duck Dynasty stars are sharing their tips when it comes deep-frying your Thanksgiving meal in a new video partnering with State Farm. (Watch it below)

Jase Robertson begins the video with some obvious tips like properly thawing the turkey. Other tips include: Shut off the fuel sources when adding the turkey to the hot oil to prevent flare-ups, never leave a hot turkey fryer unattended and keep a fire extinguisher handy.

Never use water or ice on the oil.

Uncle Si was not injured in the making of this video.

Facts & figures

Based on 2007-2011 annual averages:

  • Unattended cooking was by far the leading contributing factor in these fires.
  • Two-thirds (67%) of home cooking fires started with the ignition of food or other cooking materials.
  • Clothing was the item first ignited in less than 1% of these fires, but these incidents accounted for 15% of the cooking fire deaths.
  • Ranges accounted for the largest share (57%) of home cooking fire incidents. Ovens accounted for 16%.
  • More than half (55%) of reported non-fatal home cooking fire injuries occurred when the victims tried to fight the fire themselves.
  • Frying poses the greatest risk of fire.
  • Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires.
