Thailand’s Chulalongkorn University ‘deeply regrets’ mural with Adolf Hitler

One of Bangkok’s more well known universities made a public apology today in light of a strange and offensive billboard mural students created outside the University’s Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts building.

The mural at Chulalongkorn University featured several superheroes like The Hulk, Batman, Superman, Captain America and Adolf Hitler?

The mural was bannered with the word “Congratulations” and was part of a tribute to this year’s graduating class.

The mural caught the eye and the criticism of the Jewish human rights organization, the Simon Wiesenthal Center.

“Hitler as a superhero? Is he an appropriate role model for Thailand’s younger generation— a genocidal hate monger who mass murdered Jews and Gypsies and who considered people of color as racially inferior?” charged Rabbi Abraham Cooper, associate dean of the leading Jewish Human Rights NGO dedicated to imparting the lessons of the WWII Nazi Holocaust.

“The Simon Wiesenthal Center is outraged and disgusted by this public display at Thailand’s leading school of higher education. This mural has been on display for days nearby the University’s Faculty of History building. We are outraged by those who created this travesty, at the young person posing using the Nazi ‘Seig Heil’ salute and appalled and disgusted by the total silence of the University’s elite for the apparent failure of anyone demanding its removal,” Rabbi Cooper continued.

The Chulalongkorn University Communication Center (CCC), on behalf of Chulalongkorn University expressed deep regret over the mural, in a letter to the Simon Wiesenthal Center (see below).

The university says, “the mural was created by a group of students who were unaware of it’s significance.”

Comments about the mural on the university’s Facebook page were divided:

One poster wrote–“I still wonder why this incident happened. It’s just normal thing for students to create any kinds of mural. I ‘m sure they just did not aware and also think of it either. I believe u guys should have seen many murals or posters which doesn’t make any sense so this is just another one.”

Another was not so kind–“How can you call yourselves as educators when students who are “graduating” do not understand the significance of glorifying Hitler? Food for thought…”
