Terra Nova’ star Jason O’Mara joins ‘Agents of SHIELD’ as the new director
Coulson (Clark Gregg) shocked fans in Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D’s Season 3 finale when he revealed the organization had a new director fans now learn that Complications alum and Terra Nova star Jason O’Mara has been cast in the role.
“Bringing Jason into the mix as the new director of S.H.I.E.L.D. forces everyone, particularly Coulson, to reevaluate their role in the agency,” said executive producer and Marvel’s Head of Television, Jeph Loeb.
“Jason has both the physical presence and acting dynamics that will connect with and challenge even the most loyal agent.”
Spoiler TV reports that Coulson’s new role will be that of tracking down potential Inhumans, with Mack at his side. While the rest of the team obviously has a soft spot for rogue agent Daisy/Quake (Chloe Bennet), Jason’s character has no emotional ties — and apparently no qualms about bringing Daisy down.
Other than that, little is known of the character to be played by O’Mara, other than the fact that he will be “playing a character whose Marvel roots go back to the 1940s,” according to Marvel.
The intentionally vague allusion could mean that the character is somehow tied to Marvel’s Agent Carter (about a character from Captain America’s past who was a founding member of S.H.I.E.L.D) or simply that the character will be based on someone who has been showing up in Marvel Comics for the last
O’Mara, who also recurred in The Good Wife, will next be seen in the film Jadotville, coming soon to Netflix, in which he starred opposite Jamie Dornan.
Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. is executive produced and co-created by Joss Whedon and Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen. Jeffrey Bell and Loeb also serve as executive producers.
The series, produced by Marvel Television and ABC Studios, returns Tuesday, September 20 in its new 10 PM time slot on ABC.
