Te’jahn Butts, Tyler Ware identified as Spoto Prom thieves

Two Florida teen robbed the Spoto High School prom funds, but now have been arrested and identified. Te’jahn Butts, 17, and Tyler Ware, also 17, were arrested after they snatched the cash box containing about $3,000 from a student walking in the school’s hallway on Tuesday, Hillsborough deputies said.

Thursday’s Tampabay.com report had both student names and summarized the details, which now have been confirmed by The Global Dispatch, speaking to authorities.

Butts snatched the box, then cut across the bus ramp and through the football practice field with the cashbox, the source said, recounting witness reports.

Ware returned to the school in Riverview and was arrested on one charge of robbery and not cooperating with police. Butts was arrested later in the day, charged with strong armed robbery and grand theft.

“When you get to this level, this is a robbery. You’re imposing fear. Anybody could have gotten hurt running through the hallways,” said Detective Larry McKinnon.

Butts and Ware both attend Spoto, authorities said and confirmed the school did recover $1400, nearly half of what was in the box.

The school principal says prom will go on as planned – donations have come in from the community and Saturday’s dance is still on track.
