Tampa thunderstorm blamed for 47 car pile up which sent over 50 people to the hospital

Reportedly 47 people were injured in a massive pileup on southbound Interstate 75 near Tampa and Sarasota Friday afternoon that involved about 50 vehicles.

Just as a massive thunderstorm rolled into the area about three in the afternoon, cars and trucks began crashing into one another on the slick roadway which was worsened by the decreased visibility.

Twenty-two people, three of them in critical condition, were taken to area hospitals, Lt. Chris Miller with the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The Sarasota County Fire Department said that 29 more people were taken to hospitals.

All southbound lanes were closed for six hours, which backed traffic up for miles.

Here is a video from the Fox affiliate covering the accidents.
