Tampa Comic Convention proves to be a grand success

Comic book conventions are famous for bringing out the crazed fanboys, the creepy autograph seekers, a casual comic book collector and the connoisseurs of rare DVDs and toys. The Tampa Comic Convention didn’t disappoint.

From Ghostbusters to Wolverine to an adorable child dressed as a lego Stormtrooper – the fans came dressed for a comic book convention as the ballroom at the Doubletree in Tampa was transformed for a few hours on a beautiful Sunday.

Comic book artists Arthur Suydam, Mike Perkins, Alex Saviuk and Frank Brunner headlined a list of creators who joined with legendary wrestler Greg “The Hammer” Valentine and the King of Independent films: Joel Wynkoop.

The convention bustled as fans scurried to snag deals on comic books, toys, DVDs and collectibles. The lines for autographs and photos were consistent but never too lengthy to be out of control. Haggling the vendors to knock $5 off of the price of a poster, questioning the authenticity of rare “Nightmare on Elm Street” Nike shoes or debating the print run of a comic book – odd behavior in other settings, but not at the Tampa Comic Convention.

The Doubletree proved to be a great venue with accessible ATMs, restrooms and snacks at the hotel. Darth Vader towered over fans, greeting them at the entrance while “Ghostbusters” were more than willing to put children in the replica containment unit for a photo or two.

A costume contest was an entertaining finale to a great show as both adults and children marched across the stage. They were met with cheers and laughter as the audience truly enjoyed the enthusiasm these guests brought to the convention.
